YouthActionNet Awards
Each of ten winners age 18–29 receives a $500 cash award for a social entrepreneur project they are pursuing (not necessarily environmental). Individuals applying must “have a leadership role in a youth-led initiative that works to create positive change in their community.”
Do Something Awards
Do Something offers numerous grants and awards on a regular basis. The BRICK Award recognizes the unique experiences and achievements of two types of role models: community leaders and social entrepreneurs. Awards up to $25,000. Do Something is also partnering with GameStop in 2007 to give out weekly grants ($500 a pop) to young people across the US and Canada doing community projects.
Wild Gift
The Wild Gift project is a $10,000 - $15,000 award for five people ages 21 -30 doing environmental work. The award also consists of a 20-day wilderness hike in Alaska or Idaho. People apply to the program by outlining a proposal for a year-long project that has a goal to advance sustainability. The award goes towards paying a stipend and supporting project expenses. Deadline in April.
Yoshiyama Award for Youth Community Service
The Hitachi Foundation sponsors the Yoshiyama Awards for Exemplary Service to the Community, which honors up to 10 high school seniors for their community service. Those selected will be awarded up to $5,000 each year over 2 years. Deadline in April.
President's Environmental Youth Award (PEYA)
The President's Environmental Youth Award is given to young people from grades kindergarten through twelfth for an outstanding project to promote local environmental awareness. Young people can work individually or in groups; each project requires an adult sponsor.
American Red Cross Woodrow Wilson Award for Exemplary Youth Volunteer Service
This award goes to a young person under 21 in recognition of his/her contributions to the American Red Cross and the community. Nominations are made by chapters.
Arab American Institute: Helen Abbot Community Service Awards
Honors students and student organizations whose devotion to community service, selfless acts of care, and interest in improving the quality of life for others reflect the lift of the awards' namesake. Three awards are presented annually: one $1,000 prize to a student and two $500 grants to student organizations with impressive community service records. Organizational community service projects include, but are not limited to: community improvement and service projects such as park clean-ups, recycling programs, volunteering in shelters, tutoring programs, food/toy drives, and ethnic/cultural outreach.
Brower Youth Awards
Recognizes young environmental leaders to step forward and be recognized for their efforts. The cash prize is not a scholarship, but a reward for past work and present leadership. Recipients are generally encouraged to use the prize to assist in their own education or to further their environmental work. Six award recipients are selected each year.
Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award
Each year since 1987, Campus Compact member presidents are invited to nominate one student for this prestigious award. Five students are selected to receive this distinguished award for their outstanding public service along with $1,500 to help strengthen or sustain the service program of their design or choice.
President's Student Service Award
The President's Volunteer Service Award was created to recognize the tens of millions of Americans who have made a sustained commitment to volunteer service. The Award is given to individuals, families, and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.
NetAid Global Action Awards
NetAid Global Action Awards honor high school students in the United States who have organized and led a project that has impacted people in poor countries, or raised awareness about global poverty in their own communities. The honorees are awarded $5,000 for college or a charitable cause of their choice. Rolling deadline.
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors ten outstanding young leaders ages 8-18 annually that have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow beings; half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment. Several past Brower Youth Award winners have also won Barron Prizes, which include a $2000 check written to an organization of the winner’s choice. Youth are nominated by an adult familiar with their work (nominations due in late April).
