What is Jumpstart?
Jumpstart is a national literacy organization that recruits and trains achievement-oriented college students who develop year-long mentoring relationships with preschool-aged children, helping them develop their early language and literacy skills.
What positions are available with Jumpstart?
- Corps members - Serve on a team with 5-6 other Corps members to implement weekly literacy-based sessions inside a pre-kindergarden classroom.
- Team Leaders - Serve as a coach and model for a team of Corps members during sessions; responsible for planning/implementing group activities, team meetings, etc.
- Volunteer Coordinator - Recuits, trains, and manages volunteers for service projects sponsored and supported by Jumpstart/AmeriCorps.
- Student Program Assistant - Supports the Program Manager with service hour management, media/material creation, and documentation of Jumpstart activities.
How much time is required? Can I fit Jumpstart in my schedule?
All members are required to serve at least 300 hours during their program year term of service. Through this service, Corps Members implement Jumpstart sessions with childen (2 hourse, 2 times a week), hold team planning meetings (1 hour, 2 times a week), and serve 4 hours of Classroom Assistance Time weekly at their site in a regular classroom setting. Teams are organized according to individual schedules.
Are the schools that Jumpstart works with far from Georgia Tech?
Jumpstart at Georgia Tech works with two local preschools: Sheltering Arms Model Teaching Center (located within a 5 minutes walk from campus) and Northwest Youth Power (a 5 minutes drive). Each team has at least one person with a car who will assist with transporting others, making either site accessible for all.
How do I know if I am qualified for Jumpstart?
Do you like children? Then that's the most important thing. You should also be reliable and flexible, willing to work on a team, and be in good academic standing.
What are some of the benefits of being in Jumpstart?
